News: Police arrest woman for throwing baby into pit toilet in Ogun state

21-year-old Amudalat Taiwo has been arrested for throwing a 12-day-old baby into a pit toilet - Taiwo claimed she did it because she was poor and the baby's father has refused to provide financial assistance - The baby's father has also been arrested by the police The Ogun state police command has arrested Amudalat Taiwo, 21, for throwing her 12-day-old baby into a pit toilet. 

The press gathers that the incident occured at Taiwo's residence in Ilaro, in the Yewa South local government area of the state. The suspects was arrested after her landlord reported that one of his tenants on 28, Isheri Street, Ilaro, woke up early on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, and went to the toilet to relieve herself and later, the cry of a baby was heard inside the pit toilet. 

The Punch reports that the state Police public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the latrine was broken and the baby rescued. The police spokesperson said the suspect said she was an orphan, adding that she got married to one Taiwo Owolabi, who was already married to another woman with whom he had five children. 

Oyeyemi said: “She stated further that the husband had never taken care of her and the baby and since she had no means of catering to the newborn baby, she decided to do away with her.” The police spokesperson said the alleged husband had been arrested for failure to provide necessary assistance and care for both mother and child. Oyeyemi added that the baby is in a stable condition at the Stella Obansanjo Motherless Babies Home.
