BREAKING: Ogun State APC bows to NWC, returns to direct primaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has re-adopted direct primaries as a mode of electing the party’s candidates ahead of 2019 elections in the state.

With this, the state executive has aligned with the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC on the approval of direct primaries for Ogun State.

The state had switched from direct primaries/consensus to indirect primaries in a development which drew controversy and condemnation from aspirants and chieftains of the party.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting on Thursday evening in Abeokuta, the State Chairman of APC, Derin Adebiyi, said the party had obtained membership register from the NWC and the stage is now set for direct primaries beginning with presidential primaries tomorrow.

Adebiyi added that even though the state executive still awaits membership cards, the party can go ahead with the direct primaries.

Non-availability of party’s membership register and cards were some of the reasons cited for change of mode of primaries by the State Executive Committee.

“We know ourselves at every ward and polling unit. I am sure nobody who is not APC member will come out to participate in the primaries. And in case you caught any impositor, please don’t beat anybody, just hand him or her to the security agents,” Adebiyi said.

A representative from the state in the NWC, Alhaji Tajudeen Bello, also agreed with the chairman, as he urged members to conduct themselves peacefully in the primaries.
