Ogun State to Revive 9MW Hydro Power Plant for Improved Electricity Supply

As part of efforts to enhance power supply in Ogun State, the government is collaborating with the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to take over the 9-megawatt hydro power plant at the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority. Despite being commissioned in 1983, the facility has remained largely underutilized.

The plan is to integrate this hydro plant with the 30-megawatt gas-fired plant in Onijanganjangan, creating a balanced energy mix to improve electricity supply across the state. Under the Ogun State Light Up Project, power plants are being established in Abeokuta, Ijebu, Remo, and Yewa, with this hydro facility further strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure.

Beyond electricity generation, the River Basin’s agricultural potential will also be maximized. With vast land and access to water for irrigation, it is ideal for farm clusters, year-round food production, and cattle farming, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Food Initiative.

Additionally, the government is committed to investigating the perennial flooding in Isheri to develop long-term solutions. This initiative underscores the administration’s dedication to sustainable development and improved living standards for Ogun State residents.
